Claremont, California is an affluent community located approximately 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. Residents of Claremont are able to enjoy a sense of peace and quiet that often escapes those that inhabit the city, yet they are still able to take advantage of the many amenities the city provides due to their close proximity. Claremont is positioned right below the San Gabriel Mountains, providing residents with plenty of scenic beauty to enjoy. The city was incorporated in 1907, which is when citizens of Claremont began their famous tree-planting tradition. The city is one of the few places in North America with American Elm trees that haven’t been exposed to Dutch elm disease. This has contributed to Claremont being named the winner of the Tree City USA award for 22 years in a row by the Arbor Day Foundation.

Shopping and Dining

Residents of Claremont have a large number of restaurants to choose from that offer a wide variety of food choices, meaning they’ll never be left wanting. The same goes for the many shopping options around town. In fact, residents can often be found at The Claremont Village, which is a collection of street-front stores, galleries, offices, restaurants, and boutiques. The Village was expanded in 2007 to include a parking structure, retail space, a boutique hotel, and a cinema.

Local favorites around Claremont include Viva Madrid!, Aruffo’s Italian Cuisine, The Back Abbey, Eureka! Discover American Craft, and Dr. Grubb’s, to name a few. Some of the shops worth checking out include Shop Called Quest, Barbara Cheatley Antiques, Nectar, Heirloom, and the Little Dress Shop. Residents will find thousands of other restaurant and shopping options in the surrounding towns as well as in the City of Los Angeles, one of the country’s largest cities and cultural centers.

Parks and Recreation

Considering the emphasis that Claremont residents put on tree planting, and the yearly recognition they receive from the Arbor Day Foundation, it’s no surprise that the city has an extensive parks and recreation system in place. Claremont features 22 community parks, each with a variety of amenities such as picnic areas, sports fields and courts, playgrounds, restrooms, and paths and trails for walking, hiking, and biking. The Claremont Hills Wilderness Park consists of almost 1700 acres of natural space. The park has trails for hiking, walking, cycling, and horseback riding. Parking permits are required for the park.


The population in Claremont, according to the 2010 census, is roughly 34,926. In July of 2007, Claremont was named as the fifth best place to live in the country by CNN/Money magazine and was the highest rated city in California on that list. The unemployment rate in Claremont is only 5.3 percent, which is well below the 8.9 percent California unemployment rate and the 7.3 percent national unemployment rate. The poverty level is at 8 percent, which is also lower than the 13.5 percent state poverty level and the 12.3 percent national poverty level. The income per capita in Claremont is $36,407, which is 19.9 percent higher than California’s $30,367 income per capita and 41.1 percent higher than the country’s $25, 804 income per capita. The average household income in Claremont is $82,012, which compares favorably to California’s $64,457 average and the country’s $52,328 average.

Schools, Health, and Transportation

Claremont is known as a college town. In fact, there are seven different Claremont colleges that host an estimated 6,500 students a year from around the world. Many of these schools are considered some of the best in the country. Claremont real estate is located in the Claremont Unified School District, which educates over 6,300 students from K-12.

The medical needs of Claremont are met by several hospitals in neighboring communities. San Antonio Community Hospital in Upland provides general medical, urgent care, emergency services and a variety of other specialties. Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center in Pomona also provides emergency care in addition to a cancer center, heart and vascular center and a regional kidney stone center.

Local bus service is provided by Foothill Transit. Residents commuting to LA Union Station, San Bernadino, or the communities between them can use the Metrolink commuter train service. Domestic and international airports located in the area include John Wayne Airport, LA/Ontario International Airport, Long Beach Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, and Burbank Bob Hope Airport.
