Real estate in Orange County has always been high in demand and it’s not that difficult to understand why. With gorgeous weather, white sandy beaches, sparkling ocean, and nearby awe-inspiring mountains, residents can enjoy vacation-like surroundings for much of the year. It’s one of the reasons why Brea, one of the older, upscale communities of Orange County, continues to draw interest from prospective real estate buyers. Not only is Brea real estate located in one of the most popular sections of Orange County, it’s also a short drive from Los Angeles.

The City of Brea first began as a center for crude oil production in the beginning of the 19th century. In 1911, several smaller towns in the area merged to become Brea, which was then incorporated in 1917 as the eighth city of Orange County. Once oil production declined, the city became known for its orange and lemon groves. In 1975, the city instituted an extensive public art program that became a model and inspiration for public art programs throughout the country.

Shopping and Dining

Orange County is known for having plenty of shopping and dining options available to its residents. Brea real estate owners who enjoy grabbing a bite to eat will find that they have a huge variety of options to choose from, whether they are in the mood for Italian, Mexican, Japanese, or any other type of food. Some of the local favorites include Brunos Trattoria, Cha Cha’s Latin Kitchen, Lazy Dog Restaurant and Bar, TAPS Fish House & Brewery, and Lucille’s Smokehouse Bar-B-Que.

There are plenty of shopping options around town as well. Residents should be sure to drop in at the Brea Mall or to visit the many restaurants and shops located in downtown Brea. Some of the shops located at the Brea Mall include Sears, Nordstrom, Fossil, GameStop, Frederick’s of Hollywood, Robert Wayne Footwear, and many more. Brea residents can also venture into the surrounding towns within Orange County in order to find hundreds of additional stores and restaurants in addition to taking the short drive to Los Angeles where myriad options can be found.

Parks and Recreation

There are 18 different parks around Brea to enjoy that include Greenbriar Park, Tri-City Park, Woodcrest Park, and more. Each park features a picnic area and many include hiking trails. Some parks have even more recreational facilities, such as Ted Craig Regional Park, which contains playgrounds, baseball diamonds, basketball courts, racquetball courts, volleyball courts, bicycle trails, and fishing areas. The Wildcatters Dog Park features separate areas for small and large dogs as well as benches, drinking fountains, dog waste cleanup stations, and picnic tables. Adults and children also have the opportunity to join any number of sports leagues in addition to taking a variety of recreational classes. There is also a senior center that provides a number of classes and services to senior citizens.

The population of Brea, according to the 2010 census, is around 39,282. The income per capita in Brea is $36,115, which is 18.9 percent higher than the $30,367 income per capita in California and almost 40 percent higher than the $25,804 national income per capita. The $79,647 average household income in Brea is also higher than both California and the rest of the county. As of August of last year, the unemployment rate in Brea was a respectable 4.2 percent, which is considerably lower than the 8.9 percent state unemployment rate and the 7.3 percent national unemployment rate. Brea also boasts a respectable 5.3 percent poverty rate, which compares favorably to the 13.5 percent state poverty rate and the 12.3 percent national poverty rate. The average value of homes on Brea real estate is $598,600, which is considerably higher than the national average of $200,419 although not too much higher than the state’s average of $448,669.

Residents of Brea are served by the Kindred Healthcare Hospital, which provides emergency medical care in addition to many other medical services. Other nearby hospitals include St. Jude Medical Center and Whittier Hospital Medical Center.
